Young Leaders
We have a wide range of pupil leadership opportunities at St Egwin’s as we want all pupils to have the opportunity to contribute to life at the school. We achieve this in a variety of ways such as through the House system or through curriculum areas. One such example is our commitment to The Young Leaders program which is a national qualification run by Young Leaders.org.
Mr Taylor (Head of PE) conducts the Young Leader training over the Autumn term of school. ‘Qualified’ Young Leaders are then responsible for assisting Mr Taylor in the running of sports festivals and events that may take place on St Egwin’s grounds or away at other venues. Often, these events are designed by Young Leaders for pupils at our feeder first schools to take part in. This is one of the many ways in which we ensure that our pupils help to provide confidence and support for pupils coming to join us.
The Young Leaders team is made up of 30 year eight pupils who apply in writing at the start of the year. Applicants are chosen on the strength of their application, attitude and aptitude within P.E. and also around the school in general. Successful Young Leaders are awarded their certificate at the end of the year and may then continue as part of the Prince Henry’s Young Leader team during their time at High School. This is not about academic attainment but about displaying and promoting the key values we hold dear to as a church school; Love, Respect and Endeavour.
St. Egwin’s Young Leader Team is highly regarded across our pyramid of schools; we are often tasked with working with large groups of pupils to help facilitate county sport festivals and district events. When our Young Leaders help with events we are always so proud when staff and visitors at other schools comment on how our children act as role models to others. We work closely with our SGO Mrs. Lisa Houghton, based at the De Montfort School, and with Prince Henry’s High during their hosting of the district cross country events as well as a wide range of other sporting activities.
