House System
The House System at St Egwin's
The school works effectively to develop pupils’ character. Pupils have many varied opportunities to grow as people. This work is further underpinned by a strong personal, social and health education curriculum. Pupils develop an understanding of different faiths and cultures. They learn valuable life lessons about mental health and well-being, personal safety, positive relationships and possible career pathways. Pupils are very well prepared for their future.
Ofsted October 2024
We made the decision from September 2023 to rename the five Houses that pupils are placed into at St Egwin’s. Pupil’s are now in Attenborough, Christie, Curie, Farah or Turing House. These names have been chosen to honour inspirational people and to foster a sense of community within the wider school community. We want pupil’s at St Egwin’s to embody the values of the inspirational figures that we have selected.
The House system offers a wonderful opportunity for pupil’s to get an additional sense of belonging and pride during their time at the school and whilst I want to keep the strong ethos associated with being in one of the 5 Houses, having worked with Mr Langley and Mrs Leeson, we felt that moving away from the theme of minerals for House names to using incredible people from across a range of topics would serve the purpose of inspiring our pupil’s even further.
We have maintained the traditional colours associated with each House and use these for House notices, PE shirts and many other aspects of school life.
We have a wide range of additional challenges such as creative writing, sport, charity, art and Just Dance competitions. We also offer prizes associated with the House system to further promote our values. We are proud that each House has pupil leadership opportunities to further develop pupil’s self confidence and voice in our school.
Whilst there is plenty of competitive friendly rivalry ahead, the House system gives every pupil the chance to contribute and make a positive difference.

Alan Turing
Alan Turing was selected as an inspirational figure to name one of our Houses after for many reasons. He was a brilliant thinker and outstanding in the fields of Maths and Science. His amazing contribution and endeavour during World War Two saved many lives through his code breaking work. He was also chosen because of the terrible way he was treated due to his private life so he is a great example of the need to be tolerant and understanding.
He is a reminder to us all for the need to ‘value every individual and their God-given uniqueness’.
Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie was selected as an inspirational figure to name one of our Houses after for many reasons. She showed incredible endeavour in her work as an amazing author. Outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time
She never took her success for granted and worked tremendously hard therefore she inspires us to have the courage to pursue our dreams. As a lifelong member of the church of England she recognised the importance of her faith. In her autobiography she wrote Thank God for my good life, and for all the love that has been given to me.
David Attenborough
David Attenborough was selected as an inspirational figure to name one of our Houses after for many reasons. He is an incredible and passionate campaigner for the environment and has dedicated his career to acting justly, showing love and respect for nature and humanity alike.
Whilst he has suffered a range of health challenges he has always shown great resilience and has kept his mission of educating us all about the need to ensure we treat our planet with respect.
Many consider him to be one of the greatest Britons of all time.
Mo Farah
Mo Farah was selected as an inspirational figure to name one of our Houses after for many reasons. He faced a horrendous childhood where he was the victim of people smuggling and yet he went on to win World and Olympic titles for Great Britain. His story is one of triumph in the face of peril.
He was not allowed to go to school until he was in Year 7 but always had great respect for education and a huge love for sport which he focused on and used his God-given uniqueness to great effect. As a committed Muslim he is an inspiring figure to not just followers of Islam but to those of any faith or no faith.
His determination and resilience is perhaps best explained with his attitude to progress which we should all be inspired by “If I ever want to be as good as these athletes I’ve got to work harder. I don’t just want to be British number one; I want to be up there with the best.“
Marie Curie
Marie Curie was selected as an inspirational figure to name one of our Houses after for many reasons. Being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win two, she was a quite remarkable person!
Although she spent much of her life in France she was incredibly proud of her Polish heritage and even named the first chemical element she discovered, polonium, after her native country.
She showed incredible resilience, working in incredibly tough conditions to ensure that her work has paved the way for much of the key scientific knowledge we know today about radiation and x rays. Her love for Science would eventually be the cause of her death sadly.
