Homework Principles
Getting the balance with homework in terms of supporting progress, preparing for High School and supporting pupil confidence is a balancing act and we appreciate this.
With the setting of homework we have key principles to achieve the balance of requirements. This means that we believe with homework:
- Year 6 homework is focused on English and Maths. This supports preparation for national tests for Key Stage 2 and introduces pupils to homework without being overbearing.
- Year 7 and 8 homework is throughout the curriculum.
- Homework should not be used to introduce new learning and instead should focus on helping pupils reinforce identified knowledge from the planned curriculum that has already been covered.
- Homework is accessible and allows every pupil to achieve success.
- Where homework is a potential barrier the issues are identified and resolved, working together in partnership.
- Homework tasks typically take around 30 minutes to complete.
- Homework is not given out at the end of the lesson where pupils may be in a rush and not sure what the requirements of the task are.
- Homework is set using EduLink so that pupils, parents and carers can see and understand what the homework is and what the time frame for completion is.
- Teachers are available to respond to any email or EduLink enquiries to assist with homework.
- Homework that displays positive effort is rewarded. For example in Key Stage 3 Maths XP is awarded through Sparx homework which can result in pupils receiving a uniform pass.

We recognise that for some pupils homework can be a barrier to confidence and can represent a challenge for parents/carers. If your child is anxious about homework please let the subject teacher know.
If you are concerned that your child might be finding aspects of homework challenging, please speak to a member of our Special Needs team or the Pastoral team and they will be happy to assist you and your child. As always partnership is the key.
