Food curriculum overview

Within the Design & Technology department we aim to give all students the chance to learn valuable skills they can use for the rest of their lives as well as helping them to focus on our core Christian focus of building and shaping a community where we are all valued. We do this through appreciating how we use God’s resources to help us to inspire and support others so that we can live harmoniously and happily together. We ensure that in our work we show respect for those who have produced the materials that we work with which help us to show love to others with the outcomes our work produces.

Spirituality by its definition will be found in many ways and forms. Below are just some typical examples of where it may be found in our DT curriculum:

o Discovering how something works.

o Appreciating genius.

o Beauty in design.

o Perseverance to solve problems.

o Personal achievement.

o Learning from others and nature.

Design & Technology at St. Egwin’s is a practical subject that encourages students to learn through applying theoretical concepts to practical solutions in real world situations. We encourage creativity to design and make products based on a range of design styles; foster inquisitive minds to solve problems using science and mathematical principles and provide opportunities for pupils to reflect, self-assess and evaluate their design and making skills.

We want students to have a love of cooking and be able to plan, prepare and make a range of dishes to give them the skills they need to feed themselves and their families. Our subjects are devised by meeting the Key Aims from the National Curriculum:

  • develop the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

In addition to this we take influence from Key Stage 4 Design & Technology/Food Preparation & Nutrition to prepare our students for future studies and beyond. This means we meet the expectation for curriculum delivery but also ensures that our content is ambitious which gives our students the opportunity to strive for excellence. We want our students to feel safe and comfortable to take risks, endeavour to do their very best and walk out of the room feeling proud of what they have achieved.

Design & Technology is more important now than ever as individuals with STEM qualifications are in high demand to support the ever-changing technological advances in society. By developing independence but also promoting the importance of teamwork, we feel our subject prepares students for not only the next stage of their education but beyond. Learning about nutrition and having the ability to plan and cook a healthy meal is the key to a long, happy, and healthy life. Knowing how to cook can improve an individual’s wellbeing and provide confidence in social settings. The food/catering industry is rapidly increasing within the UK and society will need people who know how to handle food safely and hygienically.

Always remember…without the ability to cook people would not be able to feed themselves and others.
