Celebrating 50 Years of Endeavour

On Thursday 2nd July we held our 50 year celebraiton and awards evening in what was a triumphant celebration of all that is so wonderful about St Egwin’s.

With over 350 guests the evening was a wonderful opportunity to share memories of the school and to celebrate the success of the school today.

Current and ex staff and governors joined us along with representatives from the Diocese and cluster schools. Also in attendance were family members of our amazing prize winners who were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the school.

With food cooked by pupils, performances from the school (and staff) choir, speeches from current and ex staff and a superstar musical performance from ex Deputy Head Trevor Taylor, the evening was a wonderful showcase for the school.

1980s

Mystery

We don’t know much. No photos, no memories, no one willing to come forward. The 1980s at Eggies remain largely undocumented – a gap in the timeline that says more about the era than we probably realise!

Lights, Camera, St Egwin’s

The 90s are alive and well – thanks to one person with a video camera and the foresight to document a day in the life of the school. Grainy footage, familiar faces, and a reminder of just how much has changed. Watch below to take a trip back!

2000s

A Decade of Growth

The noughties were good to us. As the new millennium got underway, the school didn’t sit still – a brand new Sports Hall opened its doors, the library got the extension it had long deserved, and staff finally had a proper space to call their own. A shiny new computer room rounded things off, setting students up for an increasingly digital world.

It was a decade of building, in every sense of the word.

2010s

Expansion

The 2010s kept the builders busy. Languages and Physics both got their own proper classrooms, PSHCE finally had a home, and a two-storey block went up housing Geography on top and Cookery on the bottom floor.

Rejuvenation

Every school has its skeletons, and the 2020s have been about facing ours. Years of dwindling funds meant difficult decisions, and the consequences have been impossible to ignore – most dramatically when six inches of subsidence shifted Room 9 so severely that the trees responsible had to come down, the foundations dug up, and the whole room rebuilt from scratch with fresh concrete and level floors. Elsewhere, the music classroom has had a proper renovation – the first of many overdue ones. A behaviour cabin was added to the site too – small but significant.

The work isn’t done. A lift, ramps to the external staircases, and an expanded KS3 playground are all in the pipeline, with the old bike shed making way for something actually fit for purpose. After fifty years of making do, the school is finally getting what it always deserved.

50th: Behind the Scenes

A Tale Old As Time

There are few constants in life. But if St Egwin’s has taught us anything, it’s that nobody wants to be the school crossing guard.

We know this because we have the newspaper clippings to prove it. From the late 1970s to the late 2010s, the appeals kept coming – decades apart, different editors, different fonts, same desperate ask. Some things, it seems, never change.
