Our science curriculum encompasses Physics, Biology, Chemistry and scientific skills.

We believe science is incredibly important as it has inroads to different subjects, such as English and Maths, but it also helps the pupil to understand concepts in other subjects, e.g. Music- Why do string instruments make the sounds they do? Or Geography- How and why does it rain?

Pupils are taught in mixed ability classes in KS2 and learn a range of topics from the 3 specialisms as the year progresses. Our curriculum is partly inspired from Collins SnapScience and Twinkle, which both offer online resources.

In KS3 pupils are taught the 3 sciences separately in each term by science specialists, where we use Kerboodle, which is an Oxford University Press resource. This offers online assessments that we use in school and for homework, as well as hard and digital copies of their textbooks. Each pupil is provided with a username and password to access the content.

For some of our smaller KS3 classes, we also offer ‘learning outside the classroom’; this involves working in and around our new greenhouse, learning how to plant, germinate, grow and tend for many different types of plants.

Our assessments include using ‘End of Chapter/Topic’ tests, practical skills and reports, and online quizzes, to build an overall picture of scientific ability, knowledge and skill set.

Every year we give pupils the opportunity to represent the school in various external scientific competitions, e.g. ‘Salters Chemistry’ and ‘The Young Scientist of the Year’; having placed or won these in the past.

The philosophy of our department is to get the pupils interested in and enjoying Science as a subject in school and in the wider world. To do this we must engage them with practical experimentation, in conversations that they will continue as they leave the room and with thought provoking topics.
